Dog urine often sits on the blades and on the solid areas between holes before it finds an opening. Some liquid gets through. A lot does not — or not quickly enough. That delay starts odour.
Maintenance
To clean and reset PU properly you usually need both K9 Turf Cleaner and K9 Turf Last Resort. Apply them during rainfall so the backing becomes fully saturated. Enzyme action needs the backing wet, not just the tips of the yarn. Even after a thorough reset, regular maintenance is still required.

Latex back grass with holes. the weakest option for dogs
Latex is the traditional cheap lawn backing and the least suitable for pets.
Latex is a coating. Once urine reaches it, it does not simply pass through. It soaks in. That trapped organic load is why latex lawns develop stubborn, long-term odour that surface rinsing barely touches.
Pets and drainage
Urine sits on the surface first, then absorbs into the latex. Drainage holes help rain. They do not stop the backing acting like a sponge.
Maintenance
Resetting a latex lawn to around 80% clean usually takes several thorough washes with both K9 Turf Cleaner and K9 Turf Last Resort. Results are strongest when the products go on in the rain, so the latex is fully wet.
After those heavy cycles, adding zeolite at around 5 kg per m² can help push the area toward about 90% clean. Even then, the lawn will typically need weekly cleaning to stay acceptable.

Standard lawns with no dogs.
Verdict
Often the cheapest to buy and the most expensive to live with. You can improve it. You cannot turn it into knitted Rapid Flow.

PU backing with holes
Stiff polyurethane sheet with visible punched holes every few inches. Between the holes the backing is solid. Hold it to the light and the difference is immediate.
Latex backing with holes
Rubbery, often beige or dark coating with punched holes. Can feel tacky or crumbly with age. This is the most common cheap-lawn backing and the hardest to reset.

If the wrong backing is already down
You do not always have to rip it out on day one. You do need an honest plan.
PU with holes
Treat it as high-maintenance. Book a wet-weather reset with K9 Turf Cleaner and K9 Turf Last Resort, then keep a short routine. If odour returns quickly, the backing, not your cleaning, is the limit.
Latex with holes
Expect a heavy reset, not a single wash. Multiple saturated treatments, then zeolite at about 5 kg per m², can lift a neglected lawn a long way. Weekly cleaning after that is normal. If that workload is not acceptable, replacement with knitted Rapid Flow or Classic ProFlow is the lasting fix. On a high-use replacement, add the Air Grid at the same time so the new backing is not let down by a tight, wet base.
Already on a K9 system
Stay on the light routine. Knitted Rapid Flow should need the least product and the least time. Classic ProFlow needs a little more consistency, especially with zeolite in place.
The rain trick matters on PU and latex: enzyme cleaners work when the backing is wet through. Dry-spraying the tips of the yarn will not reset a soaked coating.
Which backing should you choose?
